Course Descriptions


The West Queens Emergency Medical Training Institute provides the following courses. Our courses utilize a blended learning model, mixing in-class lectures, practical sessions, group projects and individual assignments geared toward each student's needs. Our team of experienced, caring educators provide a high degree of professional, student-focused training.


2015 Protocol Update

This session is designed to meet the NYS DOH phychomotor requirement for the 2015 Protocol Update. It is a pre-requisite to have completed the online portion of the update, which covers the cognitive and affective educational components of this update. Attendees of the online session will receive a confirmation email from Webex. After the online session there is a 25 question quiz, which when completed, will generate a scoring email from Webex. The provider must provide a copy of the quiz scoring email, with a minimum score of 80%, to their agency for placement in their personnel file.

Once you complete this registration you will receive a confirmation email. It will also have all the information for the NYS DOH Webcast Sessions.

Emergency Medical Technician- Original and Challenge Refresher

West Queens Emergency Medical Training Institute

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course trains students in the basic life support skills necessary to treat and stabilize life-threatening medical conditions. EMTs are trained to assess patients having acute medical or traumatic events, and to provide the following skills:

  • Managing the Airway
  • Delivering Oxygen Therapy
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Defibrillation
  • Ventilatory Support
  • Immobilization of the Neck, Spine, Bones and Joints
  • Medication Administration
  • Bleeding Control and Shock Management
  • Communication and Documentation

Upon successful completion of the EMT program, students will be eligible to take the New York State EMT certifying examination.

The EMT Challenge Refresher provides current EMTs updates on patient care protocols and standards, and consists of an initial written and skills exam designed to identify individual areas of improvement. Upon successful completion of the EMT Challenge Refresher, students will be eligible to take the New York State EMT certifying exam.

Candidates for EMT must be 18 years of age by the end of the month in which they take the certifying exam.

Certified First Responder

The Certified First Responder (CFR) Course trains students in some of the basic life support skills necessary to sustain life until the arrival of more advanced providers. The CFR is trained to assess medical and trauma patients and in the following skills:

  • Managing the Airway
  • Oxygen Therapy
  • Bleeding Control and Shock Management
  • Ventilatory Support
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Defibrillation

Upon successful completion of the CFR program, students will be eligible to take the New York State CFR certifying examination.

Candidates for CFR must be 16 years of age by the end of the month in which they take the certifying exam.

Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator (CEVO) 3- Ambulance

The CEVO-3- Ambulance Course was developed to train emergency vehicle operators in the basics of safe ambulance operations. This interactive program provides the student with the appropriate knowledge to identify risks faced by emergency vehicle operators and the necessary tools to reduce accidents and incidents while operating an ambulance.

We provide both the operator-level program for drivers and the instructor-level program for training staff looking to bring this program to their agencies.

BLS for Healthcare Providers

This program is designed by the American Heart Association and covers the basic care for sudden cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, choking, and other cardiovascular emergencies. The focus of this program is on developing the skills of airway management, CPR, defibrillation, and ventilatory support. This program is designed for healthcare providers, who will routinely provide care to victims of cardiac emergencies.
